What AI visibility actually measures
- 1.Presence. Are you cited at all when buyers ask AI a question in your category?
- 2.Accuracy. When you are cited, does the AI describe you correctly?
- 3.Prominence. Are you the primary source, a secondary mention, or buried at the bottom?
- 4.Share of voice. How often you appear relative to named competitors in the same answers.
- 5.Engine coverage. Visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, weighted by audience.
AI visibility vs SEO vs GEO
Three terms get used interchangeably. They are not the same thing.
| Discipline | What it optimises | Success metric |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Web page ranking on Google | Position, clicks, impressions |
| GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) | Content structure so AI engines can extract and cite it | Citations, source inclusion |
| AI Visibility | The brand's overall presence inside AI answers | Share of voice, accuracy, prominence across engines |
SEO gets you found. GEO gets you cited. AI visibility measures whether either is working.
Why AI visibility matters now
AI search traffic grew 796% year on year through early 2026. The category did not exist as a measurable channel two years ago. Today, in considered purchases, the first conversation about your brand is happening inside an AI engine, before anyone visits your site.
Brands that structured their entity layer early are getting cited. Brands that did not are invisible at the moment of decision. The gap is widening month by month.
