Your buyers are asking AI assistants the questions they used to type into Google. They are not seeing your homepage. They are seeing a paragraph an AI wrote about your category, with two or three businesses mentioned by name. Optimizing for AI search is the work of being one of those businesses.
How AI Assistants Decide Who to Mention
Each AI assistant works slightly differently, but the core mechanics are the same. They have learned, from billions of pages, which businesses are associated with which problems. When a user asks a question, the AI ranks possible answers by confidence and recommends the ones it trusts most.
Confidence comes from three things: how clearly your business is defined on your own site, how consistently external sources describe you the same way, and how often you appear in trusted contexts (industry coverage, reputable directories, expert citations).
The Six Things to Fix First
1. Make your entity unmissable
Your homepage and About page must answer four questions in plain language: what you do, who you do it for, where you operate, and what makes you different. If a human can't summarize it in one sentence after reading, neither can an AI.
2. Add Organization schema
Structured data (JSON-LD) tells AI exactly who you are without ambiguity. Include name, description, founders, location, services, and links to your verified social profiles. This is the single highest-leverage technical fix most businesses skip.
3. Be consistent across the web
Your business name, description, and URL must match exactly on LinkedIn, Crunchbase, your Google Business Profile, industry directories, and partner sites. AI assistants cross-reference. Inconsistency creates doubt.
4. Publish on the questions buyers ask
Write the articles your ideal buyer would type into ChatGPT. Not "10 tips for marketing" filler. Specific, useful, expert answers. AI surfaces businesses that have demonstrably written about the question being asked.
5. Earn three to five real citations
One mention on a respected industry site is worth more than 100 directory listings. Aim for guest contributions, podcast appearances, partner case studies, and trusted directories like Clutch or Crunchbase.
6. Test what AI says about you
Ask each major AI assistant: "What does [your business name] do?" Then ask: "Who are the best [your category] in [your region]?" If you're absent or misrepresented, you now know where to start.
What to Skip
Skip AI-generated content farms. Skip backlink packages. Skip directories that exist only to sell links. AI assistants discount low-quality sources and, increasingly, penalize businesses associated with them.
How Long This Takes
AI assistants update their internal models on a schedule (weeks to months, depending on the platform). Real changes typically show up in two to four months for newer signals, longer for trust-based signals like authoritative citations. Start now and stay consistent.
